Grand Canyon Fluted Shist - Wall piece
In the lower, deeper parts of the Grand Canyon are some extraordinary rock formations called Vishnu schist. Schist is a metamorphic stone, most of which are derived from clays, and others from igneous rocks. For one section of the river, the cliffs are lined with magnificent ancient Vishnu schist that the water has carved over time into hollow tubes - a stone might settle in a depression and over the turbulent eons abrade the rock, creating vertical hollows. I felt compelled to recreate the feeling of those rocks in a dark brown stoneware. Hangs on the wall; suitable for outdoors.
